About Me

sarah e white crafty blogger

I come from a long line of crafty women. My grandmother and my mother taught me to knit, sew, quilt, do cross stitch, can and probably some other crafty things I can’t remember when I was a kid. Summers were spent loading up on projects to take to the county fair (and a baby blanket I knit in high school was awarded a Grand Champion ribbon as the best project in the household and needle arts category, and got a red ribbon at the state fair). Grandma tried to teach me crochet, too, but it didn’t take until I’d tried to teach myself four or five other times through the years.

My mom likes to knit and sew, one of my aunts is a master quilter, another is an art teacher. I grew up surrounded by creativity and I hope my daughter gets the same experience.

I didn’t craft much in college, but when the opportunity came to become the Guide to Knitting for About.com I jumped at the chance and probably made myself sound more qualified than I was at the time. I’ve been doing that for almost six years now, and it is so much fun to teach and to learn and to knit for a living. I also write about knitting for Craft Gossip, so I’m pretty much all over that craft!

Because of some really good placement in Google, I was approached in 2007 to write Picture Yourself Felting Your Knitting. That was the push I needed to quit my day job (as an editor at a university press) and I just reached my fifth anniversary of full-time freelancing.

I’ve had this blog most of that time, but it was in late 2011 or early 2012 that I rechristened it Our Daily Craft and made its focus crafting with kids, crafting for kids, creativity and the stuff of parenting and life. From the beginning the name has been a misnomer because I don’t actually post daily, but it’s a goal.

My second book, Quick & Easy Baby Knits was released in July 2013 by Stackpole Books.

I was recently a contributor to Craft Storage Ideas, where I wroteabout my seemingly never-ending struggle to keep my office/studio in order. I regularly write guest posts, too; check out a recent one at Home Made Simple.

Write a blog? I’d love to talk to you about guest posting.

There are ads on this site. I get money if you buy things through them. I’d love it if you wanted to support this blog in that way.

Sometimes I receive products or books to try out or review. When I haven’t purchased them myself, I’ll let you know. If I don’t say, I used my money on them.

Thanks for reading!
