I am a big fan of online crafts education. I am an affiliate for both Craftsy and Creative Bug, and I subscribe to/use both services because they offer really great, interesting and educational courses for crafters. Not only can I learn more about knitting, but also crochet, sewing, photography, art and more.

What is Craftsy?

craftsySince we’re talking about Craftsy specifically today, if you don’t know about it, Craftsy is a worldwide craft community offering online classes in categories ranging from quilting and sewing to knitting, painting, photography, cooking, and more.

I’ve enrolled in classes about knitting and sewing, and they’ve all been really high-quality, detailed classes that you feel good about paying for. The classes are done as a series of videos that take you through a project or learning a new skill. There’s a place where you can ask questions of the instructor, interact with other students and share your projects if you like, or you can just watch the videos and work on your own.

In addition to selling classes, there’s also a pattern marketplace where designers can sell (or give away) their patterns and a supply shop where students can gear up for classes or build their stashes.

More than two million people are registered users at Craftsy, and if you’re not I encourage you to go check it out.

Learning a new skill is a great way to give your creativity a boost, and you’re likely to find something in the offerings that you always wanted to try. (I should really do a crochet class next!)

The other bonus of Craftsy is that you have online access to the complete course any time you want. I shouldn’t admit this, but I have a class I haven’t accessed since 2011 and it’s still there waiting for me where I left off when I decide to go back to it.

Try it Yourself

Another great thing about Craftsy is that they offer some mini classes that are completely free. They’re usually shorter classes focused on one technique such as sewing in zippers (oh, man, I need that one!), grafting your knitting, the basics of using fondant, the secrets of great pizza at home and more.

It’s a great way to see how a Craftsy class works and learn something new at the same time, completely risk-free.

You can check out all the free classes here, or click on the pic for the knitting-specific ones.

300x2502knittingHave you ever taken a class from Craftsy or somewhere else online? I’d love to hear what you thought of it.

Or, if you try out one of the free classes, I hope you’ll report back on how it went for you!

Note: If all the above about me being an affiliate didn’t make it clear, if you click on a link here and end up buying something, I’ll get a little something. But I didn’t write this because of that. I really do love Craftsy and wish they’d hire me someday.
