This week’s Iron Craft challenge was about glitter and sparkle, which anyone who knows me will tell you is not my thing.
The girl is a little bit girlier than I am and has been known to sport some sparkle from time to time. I made her a pink and purple sensory tub in honor of her birthday (which I’ll tell you more about if she ever plays with it; we just haven’t been upstairs much lately) and one of the things I included in it was a little purple tub of sparkly purple playdough.
My recipe makes a lot more than would fit in this little container, so there is more in reserve elsewhere. This was really fun for me because it’s been a long time since I last made playdough, though I did learn it’s difficult to make a nice purple, so if anyone has tips on that I’d love to hear them!
What You’ll Need
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 packs grape Kool-Aid
- 1 tablespoon glycerine (optional)
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 cup boiling water
- purple food coloring
- glitter or glitter glue
What You’ll Do
- Combine dry ingredients in a heat-proof bowl.
- Add glycerine, oil and boiling water. Stir well.
- At this point you can add food color and glitter as desired, either right in the bowl or you can knead it into the dough after pouring the dough out onto waxed paper, which is what I did. I probably used about 50 drops of neon purple food coloring and a small container of purple glitter glue, as well as a few good squeezes from a kind of pinky purple bottle.
I know I have some regular purple glitter somewhere and I may well add it later to give some extra shine, but I think this will be fun as it is.
Do you make your own playdough? I’d love to hear your recipe or how your kids like to play with it.

I bet it smells good with the Kool-Aid in it! Does the glitter get all over you when you play with it.
I haven’t noticed it yet, but it’s not really all that glittery. It still has to be better than the black playdough I made last year in terms of mess 🙂 and yes, it does smell yummy!
