I told you that I’m focusing on the word Create this year, and taking part in the One Little Word class or whatever you want to call it. One of the things that’s going on in there is an emphasis on a particular focus for the month that has to do with your overarching focus for the year.
Mine right now is Create Space.
I mean this literally, as in making space in which I can create (meaning finally getting this pit of an office taking care of) but also freeing up space elsewhere in my house and sort of mentally creating space, too.
One way I’m working on creating space is dealing with all the little things around the house that drive me crazy but never get dealt with. That mostly means places where clutter lands and sticks.
My mantra right now is “Do One Thing.” Whenever I’m in a room while the Bit is playing and doesn’t need my attention, or I have a couple of minutes while lunch is warming or the washing machine is finishing its cycle, I focus on one thing.
Yesterday it was the top of the Bit’s dresser, which is actually a changing table we haven’t used as such for a long time. It feels really good to have it cleared off, even though we don’t need it for changing diapers.
Last night it was part of my desk. This morning I tackled her bookshelf, and I’ll probably finish up the desk when I finish up this writing. It’s all about forward progress and using those little pockets of time.
What’s Your One Thing?
Of course different people will have different “things” they want to deal with, but here are some ideas:
- Go around the house and pick up all the remaining holiday decorations. If you’re like me, you might find a couple of Thanksgiving or Halloween things about, too.
- Empty the junk drawer. Try at least to put things back neatly.
- Clear off that countertop that always gets cluttered up.
- Clean out the bottom of the closet.
- Move on to weeding out old clothes.
- Clear out your dresser, one drawer at a time.
- Go through your kids’ books and get rid of the ones that are too young for them or that they don’t read.
- Go through your own books and see if there are any you don’t expect to read.
- Clean off your desk.
- Pick up the stuff around your bathroom sink.
- Or your kitchen sink.
You get the idea. One thing a day, or even a part of a thing a day, over time will make a huge difference in the feeling of spaciousness and peace you get from your home.
