blacklisted from the ptaA couple of weeks ago I decided I needed a break from the near-constant reading of knitting books I’d been doing lately and set out to find something light — maybe even a little trashy — to read.

The best I could do was Pride and Prejudice. Damn my fine taste in literature!

Luckily, when I went to Arkansas Women Bloggers Unplugged, the keynote speaker was Lela Davidson, and she happened to have a copy of her book, Blacklisted from the PTA, for all of us.

Ahh, much better.

So I spent my long holiday weekend finally reading this book that I’ve been hearing great things about for more than a year (I actually got two copies of the book because I won one in Lela’s birthday celebration for the book), and I really enjoyed it.

I should say, for the record, that it’s not entirely trashy. There are stories about stripper poles, whore Barbies, steamy flings with the Container Store and fantasies of widowhood. There’s also the more mundane stuff of life such as date nights at Sam’s Club, head lice eradication techniques and the joys of cloth diapering for half a day.

Lela is funny, smart and a keen observer of the little things that happen every day that drive us crazy, make us laugh and make us think. She’s got a sarcastic wit I can relate to and, even though her kids are a lot older than mine, I can relate to her parenting experience as well.

We all have tough days when we wonder why we decided to become parents in the first place, days when we’re directionally challenged even with GPS, days we wish we didn’t have to try so hard to keep up with all the other parents in the neighborhood. Lela’s been there, too, and even if her stories don’t all make you laugh, they will make you feel a little less alone.

This book is a really quick read, but don’t worry, a new collection is headed our way just in time for the holidays (the title: Who Peed on My Yoga Mat?).

If you haven’t had a chance to read this book yet, here’s your opportunity. Remember how I said I got two copies of the book? Well, now I’m passing one on to one of you. It’s autographed and everything.

All you have to do is leave a comment on this post. I’d love to hear about your best (or worst!) parenting moment or what you consider to be a trashy, light read. Clearly I need some help on that one.

Extra credit if you go like my blog page on Facebook. If you do, leave that as a separate comment.

This contest is open through Sunday, Sept. 9. I’ll pick a winner next Monday. Thanks and good luck!

  1. My best moment was when we lost Jackson out the doggy door, he was 10 months old….did not know it untill my neighbor called me!!! Luckily we have always padlocked the gates on the fence (and we HAVE a fence!!!)

  2. Not really trashy, but some light reads I’ve enjoyed are Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’easter by Lisa Patton, The Friday Night Knitting Club ny Kate Jacobs, and The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler.

  3. Well I am pretty sure Noah swallowed a plum put the other day. Not a horrible moment but definitely not my worst but not a good recent one.
