Overpacking and Oversnacking

When I was in high school, I had pretty simple tastes when it came to road trip snacking. When we’d load up the bus to go to the high school journalism convention (geek from way back, right here!) it was Funyuns, kiwi-strawberry Snapple and Violent Femmes on the boombox.

The summer I worked in Oklahoma City, Zebra Cakes were my constant companion on the innumerable trips back and forth between Fayetteville and OKC.

When I worked in Massachusetts for a summer, of course it was Tasty Kakes, which I’d only just learned of at the start of the summer, which I spent in Philadelphia.

I am a big snacker, and I’m pretty firmly convinced that if I could just give up snacking (or eating crap, anyway) I could easily lose those last few pounds still linger three years after my child left my body.

It ain’t happening this weekend.

No, this weekend is the Arkansas Women Bloggers Unplugged conference, a time of rest, relaxation, learning, fun, camaraderie. And snacking.

Lots and lots of snacking, from the look of it.

If anyone needs a snack at AWBU, come see me.

No, I am not going to eat all of this myself, or all this weekend. But a girl needs options. And they’re not all bad.

The Tasty Kakes are still there, because we can get them in Arkansas now and I want to make sure that continues.

Take 5 is my current favorite junk candy bar. I don’t know why. I guess it’s the whole salty-sweet-crunchy thing. I have already broken into these, I must admit.

Then there are some semi-healthy options: almonds and some “breakfast” trail mix stuff that has way too much fat and sugar for what it is. I mostly bought these because I want to make a healthier version but am too lazy to do it today.

I’ll probably also take some cashews for mid-conference snacking.

There’s a possibility that I’ll stop at a convenience store somewhere and pick up a Zebra Cake, too. Just for old time’s sake.

And I did buy a bottle of Snapple, too. Haven’t had one in years.

Safe travels, everyone, wherever your weekend takes you!

  1. Have fun! I’m interested to hear about the conference.

Road trips used to be the one time Mom would let us get junk food, so I would get Slim Jims and Jolly Ranchers or Starbursts and a Dr. Pepper. In college, I relied on Gordetto’s snack mix and huge gas station fountain Mt. Dews on the monthly weekend drive across the state to visit my parents. But these days, with three kids, it’s all apples, sticks of colby jack, pretzels, and juice boxes. I do think huge cups of caffeinated drinks might be in order when we trek to Tupelo this winter to visit the other set of grandparents!
