We’re having a pretty rainy (as in more than 5 inches expected over a couple of day) Spring Break, and are quickly realizing the importance of getting outside when you can. After the Bit’s (much-too-short) nap yesterday there was a break in the weather so I decided to whip up a batch of homemade bubble solution. making buble solution

I’d bought a big spillproof bubble bucket (solution not included) at Target last week just for this purpose, and the recipe I found, from Come Together Kids, could not be easier to put together.

What You’ll Need

  • a 4-cup glass measuring cup or microwave-safe bowl (the measuring cup makes it easier to mix and measure all at once; fewer dishes!)
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup liquid dish soap
  • spoon
  • places to store your bubbles

What You’ll Do

  1. Measure the water and corn syrup in your cup or bowl. Microwave for 3 minutes.
  2. Stir, then add dish soap. Stir some more.

A picture of making bubble solution may just be the most boring thing ever!
  3. Allow to cool a little before using. Ours, admittedly, was still warm when we took it outside!

Colored Bubbles

The bubble bucket only held about a cup of the 3.5 cups solution I made. We happened to have one of those big bubble tubes with the long wand that was empty (the Bit dumped what was left of the solution in there some time last week( so I decided I’d try to make some colored bubbles to go in there.

Food coloring made the solution colorful, but not the bubbles

All I did was add food coloring (probably about 20 drops total, more blue than red, to make the inky purple blue shown). As you can see the solution is a pretty color; what you might not be able to see in the picture is that the solution on the wand still looks pretty clear and the bubbles are still clear (admittedly I’ve never used purchased colored bubbles; maybe they’re only colorful in the bottle, too?).

Bubble Storage

After filling all the things in the house that needed bubbles, I still had a bout a cup of solution left. I happen to have a big stash of Mason jars in my garage so I washed one up and put the rest in there.

I’m sure I’ll decorate it more cutely later, but for now I just labeled it as bubbles.

Have you ever made your own bubbles — colored or otherwise? If you have a favorite recipe I’d love to hear it.
